Kickstarter for Wunderkammer

I’m a little late in posting this, but please check out my Kickstarter project to help fund my travel, production, and accommodation expenses for my next group show, Wunderkammer, this July 12th at True Love Art Gallery in Seattle, WA.

With 2 weeks to go before the show and the close of the project, it has already been fully funded! But there are still some great rewards available for every pledge level, including collectible “Wunderkammer” cards, limited edition prints, and even original pieces by me and the wonderful Siolo Thompson.

Thank you!!

2nd Mummy Profile in my triptych. The finished piece will be on display in the group show Wunderkammer, this July 12th at True Love Art Gallery in Seattle, WA.

It’s been ages since my last update… I’m really terrible at maintaining a blog on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. When I was little I could never keep a diary more than three days in a row, followed by a quick update months later, and maybe a straggling note a year or two down the road. Lots of unfilled pages in my childhood diaries. I’m just too easily distracted and caught up in whatever is consuming my attention from minute to minute.
But here I am! With a sneak peek of a series I’m currently working on for a group show in Seattle this July called “Wunderkammer.” Centered around the theme of a cabinet of curiosities, I decided to go the morbid route with MUMMIES!! I’ve been obsessed with mummies since forever, and I love exploring their grotesque beauty and lasting vitality.
This first mummy is part of a triptych - pencil and gouache on Arches Hot Press Watercolor Paper. (for you Egyptian history geeks, he’s Thoutmosis the first).

Wunderbar

A couple of news items:

I’m sadly bidding Juxtapoz a fond farewell — it’s been an amazing internship/assistantship, and I feel so fortunate to have had some small hand in such an awesome enterprise. Now, it’s full steam ahead for my 2012 art projects!!

I got a great mention in a German blog, Temp Magazin. Check it out!

I’ve also submitted my work to IndiesArt.com, and I need YOUR help to vote me into the database! Tweet or Like my submission to cast your vote :)

It’s been a while since my last update — I’ve been completely preoccupied with a series of illustrations (that I can’t reveal yet!) and my blogging work at Juxtapoz. My caffeine addiction has once again reared its ugly head, and I’ve developed an unhealthy obsession with Law & Order: Criminal Intent, or more specifically Det. Goren. (excellent viewing fare while drawing - I daydream of having his genius detective babies).
So for the absence of updates, here’s an adorable grinning puffer fish. Don’t cuddle him too close, though - he’ll poke your eye out with his smile.

Squid Time

Pretty cool - one of my squid sketches is featured on science20.com!

Today a birthday package arrived from my mother containing one of the best gifts I can imagine (other than a puppy or a French vacation): Walton Ford’s Pancha Tantra!! Leafing through it I seriously almost shed a tear, I was so moved by the beauty and subtle narratives of his work. The book pleases and inspires me to an insane degree, and it reinvigorates my drive to be the best artist I can possibly be (kind of over-the-top, but true).

2012 News

I’m so excited for the rest of the year to unfold. In addition to some awesome projects and commissions I’m working on, I’ve already lined up three shows for 2012!! I can’t wait to post progress pics… More info to follow in the coming months.
